To become a certified contractor you must pass a Business and Law exam in many states and, depending on the classification you need, you may need to pass a trade exam as well. If you are unsure what your classification requires, please use our Information Request Form.

Contractor School Online (CSO) will assist you with their professional consultants and provide study materials, also practice tests for the Business, Law, and Management and your trade if available. If purchases are made elsewhere make sure the correct author, title and year are appropriate for the trade.

Construction Work Regulated:

Plumbing and electrical work is regulated at the state level. Most other construction work is regulated in varying degrees by the cities or counties.


License Requirements

Highway Prequalification:

  • Financial limits are set based on bonding capacity. If required financial are unaudited, limits for bidding may not exceed $500,000. Prequalifications are on an annual basis. The average processing time of a new application is 4 days.

Electricians:

  • A master electrician's license will be issued upon receiving a passing grade on an examination.

  • Other- A bond is required on all public works projects over $50,000 for at least 50% of the total amount payable.

Reciprocal Agreements

Most cities and counties requiring licensing recognize a common Reciprocal Construction Supervisor Exam (RCSE) for licensing purposes. An electrical reciprocity agreement exists with Virginia and a plumbing agreement with the state of South Dakota.
